That what cannot be translated in words
The Mysore room
Madalina Yoga Alliance E-RYT 500
Mysore Style ashtanga yoga. If you never experienced this type of yoga, it will be..a silent room, we all practice a set of yoga postures in our own rhythm and sometimes, the teacher comes and assists us in the difficult asanas.
There is a silence in the room where everybody practices, and it is a silence that we share. Whatever happens, it happens with fewer words, through the body, the movements, the eyes, the presence of the breath. The teacher, is holding the room means being there, observing, trying to understand what is happening through a kind of wisdom we don’t use so much anymore.
We have become so obsessed and dependent with communication, with expressing ourselves, till the point we forget that just being in a room with people and doing something together is a way of communicating. It’s like we have forgotten how to be with each other without words, without searching to express, share identities, ideas and desires. To be with each other through movement and breath, to look at each other silently, to observe each other and try to understand the subtle story we carry secretly inside us.
I’m living the same experience with the kirtan group. We’re singing together, but we’re not talking to each other during that time. We just attune. Is another way of perceiving and felling. We’re sharing the music, the notes, the vibration between us which somehow goes beyond us. We don’t need to explain anything; we just get into whatever the sounds are creating. We are just inside a vibration, a sacred space where beauty unfolds, like in the Mysore room.
And it’s the same when I do kalarippayattu, when you follow a few short instructions , in a language I don’t understand and do the movements, more or less by copying them; you can feel the other person near you, and you, somehow tune into the rhythm of the practice.
All these stories collide into each other and they meet in the.... Mysore room, which becomes a metaphor for a sacred space where we can meet without many words.
We sometimes forget to communicate with others in different ways. It can be through movement, through dance, through a gaze, through a song. And suddenly we can perceive the astonishing beauty of another human soul without grabbing it’s essence through a 3 hours conversation. An even better sometime just by not trying to define ourselves we unfold aspect of our identities we never, ever thought they can come into life.
There is Magic in this togetherness, in the way we inhabit life completely when we are doing something with our bodies.
I have felt these two months being here the magic of Mysore. I have lived without expressing too much .I had so many moments of silence and pause.. Things happened for no apparent reason, and they came surprisingly towards me..and the moved me deeply from a place I didn’t even knew existed.
Even in yoga, or in the depths of spirituality or meditation, whatever touches us can be beyond words, it is that Mystery we all search. That cannot be translated in words.
I have always felt that when I like something, I want to melt into it. It can be a person, an experience, a passion. I want to live it completely. And I feel that we limit our experiences with words, trying to express everything while there is still so much happening between us, in the silence we share.
I would say like the main point of it is like how can you communicate without words? And how we forget that our body in itself is like a map to ourselves and to each other.
And bodies are instruments of creation, they can create:
-The speech ,in the way we articulate speech, how we vibrate our vocal cords into emotions and also music.
-The movement, the way we articulate movements, we express and interact with each other. The body, it’s a living expression of ourselves and I emphasize on ‘Expression’ and not ‘Image’..because ‘Image’ is still but the body is in continuous movement.
As Alice Miller says, the body never lies. The body is the most authentic expression of ourselves (and I’m not talking of the marketed body, the esthetic one but, the body that lives, the aliveness inside you).
We are living in a world where we’re bombarded by information and words. Everything has to have a meaning. It’s so much information out there. So basically, our mind is wired to words, like on a fast track..
Conclusion…. in a world bombarded with information, sitting in a Mysore room (reffered as a space for alternatives ways of expression) and just exploring other ways of communicating with each other, it’s AWESOME. And it’s also it tells you that you need to be together in a room, in a space. That space is important for closeness because we’ve been so much in this tool ( a cell- phone as my friend says), we forgot that in order to appreciate each other, sometimes we need to sing with each other in the same room or practice yoga with each other in the same room or just do a kalari class in the same place and swing some knifes.
